Strengthening World-Class Research, RG Metals UNS Partners with Metallurgy Expert from Islamic University of Madinah

RG METALS – In a strategic move to strengthen its international research network, the Metals Research Group (RG) from Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta welcomed a special visit from Prof. Dr. Ir. Fathı Güngör, a leading expert in metallurgy from the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia. This visit marks the beginning of a research collaboration focused on innovation in advanced welding technology.

The warm meeting at the RG Metals laboratory served as a bridge between two research institutions from different countries. Intensive discussions took place between Prof. Güngör and the RG Metals team, led by Prof. Dr. Triyono, ST., MT., IWE, covering various challenges and opportunities in materials engineering, particularly in Friction Stir Welding (FSW) techniques.

This collaboration will focus on joint research into the simulation and visualization of material flow during the Double-Sided Friction Stir Welding process. “Understanding how a material ‘moves’ and deforms at the micro-level during welding is key to controlling the joint’s quality,” explained Prof. Güngör. “With advanced simulation facilities, we can predict outcomes and optimize process parameters before conducting costly physical experiments.”

As a follow-up, Prof. Güngör will also serve as a co-supervisor for a doctoral student at UNS, guiding dissertation research on a topic aligned with this collaboration. This step not only enriches the student’s research experience but also ensures the sustainability and long-term knowledge transfer between the two institutions.

Prof. Dr. Triyono warmly welcomed this collaboration. “A partnership with an expert of Prof. Güngör’s caliber opens doors for RG Metals to contribute to world-class research. This is a golden opportunity for our team, especially our young researchers and students, to learn from the best and expand their international horizons.”

The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to produce high-impact scientific publications and develop industry-applicable technologies. The collaboration between RG Metals UNS and the Islamic University of Madinah stands as tangible proof that cross-border academic synergy is a key accelerator for the advancement of science and technology.
