The Problem Addressed
Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology based on photopolymer resin has brought a revolution to the world of dentistry, enabling the creation of high-precision dental models. However, a major drawback of this resin is its relatively low mechanical properties, limiting its use in various applications. This research introduces a new approach to overcome this limitation by adding hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles to the resin. Hydroxyapatite is ideal due to its biocompatibility and strength—to enhance the mechanical performance of the final product.
What Was Done and Found
This research created four types of composites by mixing HA nanoparticles into dental resin at different concentrations (0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% by weight). The resulting samples were 3D printed and their mechanical properties were thoroughly tested, including tensile tests (tensile strength and elastic modulus), impact tests (impact strength), hardness, and tribological properties (wear rate and friction coefficient). The results showed that the addition of HA nanoparticles significantly improved all tested properties. The composite with a 5% HA concentration exhibited the greatest improvement, with a tensile strength reaching 43.4 MPa and a hardness of 79.32 Shore D. This composite also demonstrated the lowest wear rate and friction coefficient.
Impact and Significance
This research successfully proves that the addition of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles is a highly effective strategy for enhancing the mechanical and tribological properties of 3D-printed photopolymer resin. This finding paves the way for the development of new advanced materials in dentistry and restoration. With superior mechanical properties, the composite material developed from 3D printing technology can be used for broader applications, such as the creation of more durable dental prosthetics and orthodontic components.
