Academic and Industry Synergy: Prof. Triyono from RG Metals UNS Leads Electric Vehicle Development with PT. UMG Idealab

RG METALS – Answering future challenges in the transportation sector, a strategic collaboration has been forged between academia and industry. Prof. Dr. Triyono, ST., MT., IWE, a principal researcher from the Metals Research Group (RG) at Sebelas Maret University (UNS), is collaborating with PT. UMG Idealab Indonesia, an innovation company, to lead the development of a national standard Electric Vehicle (EV).

The partnership, which began in March 2024, is an ideal model of how advanced university research can meet industrial vision. PT. UMG Idealab, which has a strong commitment to developing innovative technology in Indonesia, found a suitable partner in RG Metals UNS, which possesses deep expertise in materials engineering and manufacturing. The goal is to create an EV that is not only technologically advanced but also safe, reliable, and affordable.

The main focus of the 14-month project is to produce a functional electric vehicle (EV) prototype that is ready for further testing. This is not just about assembling components, but about a research-based design process, from frame design and material selection to strength analysis and manufacturing process development, ensuring the final product truly meets the highest quality standards.

“This kind of collaboration is crucial,” said Prof. Triyono. “The university has excellent research potential, and when supported by vision and investment from industry players like PT. UMG Idealab, we can accelerate the downstreaming of research into tangible products that benefit society.”

With the prototype being a motorcycle type by the second year, 2025, the resulting prototype will be handed over to PT. UMG Idealab for further development towards commercialization and mass production. It is hoped that this collaboration will inspire more synergy between academia and industry to support Indonesia’s technological independence, especially in the growing EV sector.
